Jim Mclean Golf School
Jim is one of the very few teachers to have taught major winners on both the PGA tour and LPGA tours. Cristie Kerr (2), Tom Kite (1), Alexis Thompson (1), Keegan Bradley (1).
Jim is a member of 6 Halls of Fame…he’s in the Pacific Northwest Hall of Fame for his record as a player. Jim is in the MET PGA Hall of Fame, the South Florida PGA Hall of Fame, the Miami Sports Hall of Fame, Long Island Hall of Fame, and was recently inducted into “The World Teachers Hall of Fame”.
Jim McLean has been the director of golf at 4 top private clubs in America: Sunningdale, Quaker Ridge, Tamarisk CC in Ranch Mirage, CA and Sleepy Hollow CC in New York. He was also the director of golf at the Doral Resort in Miami, Florida, and now headquarters his golf schools out of Trump National Doral. Jim has 10 golf school locations worldwide.
Since being at Doral, Jim has taught and developed many juniors and amateurs that have won on the professional stage. This includes Cristie Kerr who grew up at Doral, worked with Jim since age 14, and was the #1 ranked junior in the USA. She was also the #1 ranked amateur, and a member of the Curtis Cup by age 17. Cristie qualified for the LPGA right out of high school and would later attain the #1 ranking in the world as a professional. Cristie has won 2 majors, the U.S. Open and the LPGA, and is the all-time leading money winner of any American.
Erik Compton also grew up at Doral. He also became the #1 ranked junior in USA. Erik Compton has had 2 heart transplants, the first at age 12, the second at age 28, but is now remarkably on the PGA Tour. He was the runner up in the 2014 U.S. Open.
Alexis Thompson came to Jim’s golf school at age 8. She won the U.S. Junior, became the #1 ranked junior and the #1 women’s amateur in the USA, and made the Curtis Cup team, all by age 14. Lexi has qualified for every U.S. Open since age 12. She finished 10th in the U.S. Open at age 15, and won an LPGA event at age 16. Lexi won her first major in 2014, The Kraft-Nabisco. Jim began working with Lucy Li at age 7. She qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur at age 10, and the U.S. Women’s Open at age 11; both were all time records.
Jim has taught 8 juniors who’ve achieved the #1 ranking. In addition, Jim started working with Keegan Bradley when he was 22 years old and playing on the Hooters Tour. In 2010, Keegan got to the Nationwide Tour, and 2011 to the PGA Tour where he won the Bryon Nelson, the PGA Championship, the Grand Slam, the Shark Shootout, and was named Rookie of the Year. Jim traveled with Keegan to many events, including the 2012 Ryder Cup and the 2013 Presidents Cup.
Jim has also developed a huge number of great young teachers, who themselves have developed many tremendous young players. Jim has trained his system to over 100 professionals at Doral who are now directors of golf, or directors of instruction at top private clubs.
As a player, Jim is in the Pacific Northwest Hall of Fame. He won over 50 junior and amateur events including the Pacific Coast Amateur (held at Olympic CC in SF), the 4 States Amateur (held in Texarkana), the Northwest Amateur (3 times), and the Northwest Open. He qualified for two U.S. Opens, finished 4th in the U.S. Amateur, was the first alternate to the U.S. World Cup, and was an All American at the University of Houston where he won 3 college events. Jim played on teams with Bill Rogers, Fuzzy Zoeller, John Mahaffey, Bruce Lietzke, Keith Fergus, and Bobby Wadkins. Houston won the NCAA two of the four years Jim was at Houston and finished second the other two years. He qualified for 10 National Club Pro events, won the Westchester PGA in the Met Section, and won the National Skins Game held in Palm Springs, California ($61k). Jim also qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open. Jim also made the cut at The Masters.
He started his teaching career at Westchester CC in Rye, NY. He served there for 5 years giving lessons alongside golf greats Light Horse Harry Cooper (36 PGA Tour wins and PGA HOF) and Mary Lena Falk (26 LPGA Tour wins and US Amateur Champion). There were 1,800 members at Westchester CC and a PGA Tour event that Jim played in twice. Jim ran the Westchester junior program with over 100 juniors and also helped start the Met Section Junior Program. Jim developed many junior golfers in the NY area that became national players. This included Margaret Platt who was a First Team All-American in college, Curtis Cup member for the USA, and played the LPGA for 5 years recording 3 runner-up finishes. Don Edwards won all of the Met Junior Events, plus “The Western Junior”. Gail Flanagan played in 26 USGA events, won the Met Open as an amateur, plus all of the other junior and amateur titles in the Met Section. Carl Alexander won the National Club Pro Stroke Play. George Zahringer established the greatest amateur record in Met history. He won the Met Am 6 times, won the Met Open, qualified for 18 U.S. Amateurs, won the US Mid-Amateur, has qualified for 50 USGA competitions, made the U.S. Walker Cup Team, qualified for 8 U.S. Senior Opens, was low amateur 3 times, and won the British Senior Amateur. George won the USA Skins game in 1989 at PGA West with Jim, winning $61,000 (televised on ESPN).
Jim has taught over 100 tour pros including Peter Jacobsen, Bernhard Lager, Hall Sutton, Brad Faxon, Tom Kite, Dana Quigley, Vaughn Taylor, Al Geiberger, Gary Player, Lenny Clements, Lenny Mattiace, Erik Compton, and Keegan Bradley. Jim also taught 4 Women US Open Champions: Liselotte Nuemann, Cristie Kerr, Laurie Merten, and Jane Geddes.
He has a weekly show on Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio, and will again be appearing on The Golf Channel’s “Golf Academy Live”. Jim was one of the original teachers on The Golf Channel staff and did weekly shows for 10 years.
Jim is a part owner of Revolution Golf, revolutiongolf.com, and he and his team of instructors do hundreds of golf tips each year on this site. RG goes to over 2 million golfers each day.
Both of Jim’s sons received 4 year scholarships to major universities; Matt to Wake Forest, and Jon to Oklahoma State. Jon lived with Rickie Fowler and Kevin Tway and played on a team that included Morgan Hoffman and Peter Uhilein. Jon was ranked as high as #6 in amateur golf. As a junior, he was a first team AJGA All-American. Matt teaches at the Fisher Island Golf Club in the Met Section, and is ranked as one of the top “40 Teachers under 40”. He played on teams with Bill Haas and Webb Simpson.
