“As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we are proud to honor our founder, Dr. Carlos Albizu Miranda,” said Albizu University President Dr. Nelson E. Soto. “His vision and dedication continue to inspire our mission and guide our community. Every classroom, graduate and act of service carries forward the values he instilled. We invite the community to join us for this special celebration honoring his extraordinary legacy.”
Founded in 1966 by Dr. Carlos Albizu Miranda, Albizu University began as the first independent professional school of psychology in North America. During its inaugural academic year (1967-1968), approximately 20 students enrolled, laying the foundation for the institution’s academic community. In 1972, the Caribbean Center for Advanced Studies was officially approved and registered as a nonprofit corporation. By 1974, the institution had earned accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), marking an important milestone in its development of doctoral-level education in Clinical Psychology.
In 1977, the institution relocated to facilities in Santurce, Puerto Rico, beginning a new period of rebuilding and growth. Later in the decade, a historic building in Old San Juan, formerly the Roman Baldorioty de Castro School, was restored. The institution expanded beyond Puerto Rico in 1980 with the establishment of the Miami Institute of Psychology, which subsequently moved its operations to a facility at 300 SW 12th Avenue in the early 1980s.
Academic offerings continued to grow throughout the following decade. In 1988, the institution established its doctoral program in General Psychology, followed by the introduction of a bachelor’s degree program in Psychology in 1989. The San Juan campus’s Clinical Psychology program received accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA) in 1994, followed by APA accreditation for the program on the Miami campus in 1995. In 1996, the University experienced significant growth in clinical services, library resources and student enrollment. Continued expansion followed in 1999, when the Miami campus expanded facilities to accommodate growing academic and program needs.
During the early 2000s, the administrative structures, policies and management processes were strengthened at the University. In the latter part of the decade, the University continued to advance educational innovation while reaffirming its accreditations. The 2009-2013 strategic plan established priorities for continued institutional growth and development.
In 2015, Albizu University established the Mayagüez University Center, expanding access to graduate education in western Puerto Rico. The University also broadened its academic offerings into emerging fields, including cyberpsychology and technology-focused education, while continuing to achieve placements for students in nationally recognized internship programs. Along with academic growth, the University expanded its community impact through mental health services and the continued development of Albizu Clinics.
More recently, Albizu University has achieved additional milestones in academic accreditation and community service, as well as other notable recognitions. In 2024, the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology program at the Mayagüez University Center received APA accreditation. In 2025, the Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology program in Miami earned renewed APA accreditation for a 10-year period. In January 2026, Casa Albizu received accreditation from the National Children’s Alliance as a Child Advocacy Center. This achievement made Casa Albizu the first accredited Child Advocacy Center in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and Latin America. Albizu’s Miami Campus was also named the top institution for Best Online Master’s in Organizational Psychology Programs in 2020 by BestColleges.com and ranked among the top 10 institutions for Best Online Psychology Master’s Degrees in 2026 by Forbes Advisor.
From its founding as a pioneering institution for professional psychology education to its expanding academic programs, clinical services and community partnerships, Albizu University continues to build on Dr. Carlos Albizu Miranda’s legacy of advancing psychology education and serving diverse communities.
